From “Utz” about the “glass-disease” to the corpus of finds
Utz, the eponymous main character of Bruce Chatwin’s final novel, is a Jewish collector who risks his life in Czechoslovakia during the Soviet rule. Although he has multiple opportunities to leave the country, he cannot bear to separate himself from his glass and porcelain collection. Intriguing in his own right, Utz also provides Chatwin standing for investigations into the nature of art, the psychology of obsession and private collecting.
When Utz supposedly dies and his collection mysteriously disappears, these events are left open to interpretation.
But: He was alive! And a part of his collection was saled by Dr. Fischers auctions. The story reads like a crime thriller: Two different sellers – native of/from Prague and Bratislave – consigned glasses, in which Dr. Fischer found two hand-written notes with the registration number – identical to each other. Obviously both glasses based on the same collection – the “Utz” collection. During the collection is untraceable in the novel, in fact it was lost after the death of Utz. After many years different objects appears on the art market – published by his wife Marta. Dr. Fischer succeeded in locating the son of Marta to offer a part of the collection in the auction house. But that’s only one short story in the thirty years old company history.
Auction house Dr. Fischer was founded in 1976 as an auction house specialized in Rare Transylvanian Ceramics and Faience. Today Dr. Fischer is German’s Leading Auctioneer for European Glass and Studio Glass and it has also separate departments devoted to Porcelain, Ceramics, Paintings, Silver, Jewellery, Pewter, Faience and Russian Works of Art.
Dr. Fischer holds three large auctions of “European Glass and Studio Glass” each year, one of them in the famous glass city Zwiesel in the Bavarian Forrest, as well as two auctions “Art and Antiques”, “Russian Art, Fabergé and Icons” and "Modern & Contemporary Art and Photography". In addition, specialized auctions, for example important private collections are also held.
