Our sales of Old Master Paintings have more than ever offered a rich panorama of works with a strong French identity. The year opened with the Jacques Bacri collection, including a magnificent portrait of Anne de Pisseleu, duchess d’Etampes, by Corneille de Lyon. It continued with the sale L'Elegance Intemporelle which included a beautiful set of watercolours from Carmontelle. The results obtained once again attest to the fact that the world market is looking for quality paintings that are often unseen and with old origins. The year was punctuated by magnificent masterpieces, like two compositions for the King of France at Fontainebleau by Charles-Joseph Natoire or the world record obtained for Marguerite Gérard with La Toilette de Minette. Sales of this department totalled €15 million this year. Totalizing €5,5 million in our Paris sales, 19th Century paintings have been most performant thanks to their exceptional quality and the diversity of the artists presented. From Neoclassism to before-war realism, this year’s selection is very rich. Among the main works, we will offer at auction an exceptional Bohemian portrait with a mandolin by Corot, a beautiful painting by Boldini, Washerwoman and brunette by the Seine, Paris, and a magnificent painting by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Sketch for Summer : The Bath. An extraordinary collection of Lorraine artists will also be presented, counting beautiful works by Emile Friant. With a total amount of €8 million this year, the traditional field of European Sculpture & Works of Art maintains its strong attractiveness and remains a safe buy. Our expertise, our excellent knowledge of the market and our approach have been hailed by private collectors and public institutions, like the original plaster relief of the Martyre de Sainte Victoire by Nicolas-Sebastien Adam, pre-empted by the Chateau of Versailles. Also worth mentioning is the highest bid in the sale of the Riahi collection, which was awarded to a 17th century Giallo tigrato polychrome marble leopard attributed to Antonio Moglia, an extremely rare sculpture that attracted up to €1 million.
