Although orphaned at the age of fourteen, Gustave Rodolphe Boulanger, of Creole ancestry, had many opportunities to study painting and to travel, going to Algeria for the first time in 1845. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1846 after studying with the masters Pierre Jules Jollivet (1754-1871) and Delaroche (q.v.). Only thr
